Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a minimally invasive surgery that creates a smaller stomach and reroutes part of the intestines, helping patients eat less and absorb fewer calories.
Dr. Kurian divides the stomach into a small pouch and a larger remnant. The small intestine is attached to the pouch through a procedure called gastrojejunostomy, using the Roux limb, which is measured at 150 centimeters. This allows food to bypass most of the stomach and the initial part of the intestine.
The procedure is typically done using small incisions (laparoscopy), though some patients may need a larger incision (open gastric bypass).
