Gastric Bypass

Gastric Bypass Quick Facts

  • Improves diabetes in many cases.

  • Minimally invasive surgical procedure.

  • Sometimes covered by insurance.

  • Permanent, but can be reversible.

What is the Gastric Sleeve?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a minimally invasive surgery that creates a smaller stomach and reroutes part of the intestines, helping patients eat less and absorb fewer calories.

Dr. Kurian divides the stomach into a small pouch and a larger remnant. The small intestine is attached to the pouch through a procedure called gastrojejunostomy, using the Roux limb, which is measured at 150 centimeters. This allows food to bypass most of the stomach and the initial part of the intestine.

The procedure is typically done using small incisions (laparoscopy), though some patients may need a larger incision (open gastric bypass).

Important Information to Know About Gastric Bypass

The gastric bypass operation, the most common weight loss procedure in the US, carries risks such as bleeding, infection, leaks, and blood clots. Reoperation may be necessary to manage complications, including potential bowel obstruction over the long-term.

On average, five years after surgery, patients typically lose around 60% of their excess weight. Gastric bypass can also improve or resolve health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and joint pain, depending on individual health history.

Continued success post-op hinges on lifelong follow-up care with Dr. Kurian and her team, including guidance from a dietitian. Surgery marks the beginning of a comprehensive journey towards weight loss, health restoration, and long-term well-being.

Post-Op

A gastric bypass can help patients lose weight, and a post-op diet and exercise plan tailored to individual abilities can help maintain that weight loss.

Additionally, the surgery can improve various obesity-related health issues, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • GERD
  • Heart disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Cancer

Significant weight loss may also help with infertility issues. Moreover, patients often experience mood and mental health benefits from weight loss, as it makes regular exercise easier, which further supports mental well-being.
